I know it is difficult to see, but you can stick your head in the cutout in the board and get your picture taken with Ferrous (not shown) and the gorgeous Fefe, the official mascots of the Pigs.

nearbynature boxwood by Vicki Hertzberg from the GigaPan My front yard, Atlanta, 20120618 by Vicki Hertzberg
We had some shrubs growing here that were supposed to be dwarf laurels, but there appeared to be nothing dwarf about them. So we planted boxwood here this spring, which should provide a nice foundation planting. There is a big slope here, so some plants will be kept pretty short while others will be allowed to grow tall so that eventually we can buzz cut across in a straight line.

nearbynature bradford pear replacement by Vicki Hertzberg from the GigaPan My front yard, Atlanta, 20120618 by Vicki Hertzberg
These neighbors had a big ole Bradford pear tree growing here. Unfortunately it split badly, not once, but twice, so they ended up taking it out. I'm afraid that this is another Bradford pear. I hope they got a variety that is not so prone to splitting.

nearbynature shrub by Vicki Hertzberg from the GigaPan My front yard, Atlanta, 20120618 by Vicki Hertzberg
This is a fast-growing landscape shrub, and I can't think of its name right now. It is planted on the other side of my neighbor's yard, to screen their other neighbor's yard from view.

nearbynature crape myrtle by Vicki Hertzberg from the GigaPan My front yard, Atlanta, 20120618 by Vicki Hertzberg
This particular variety doesn't grow up all tall and leggy. It will bloom a dark pink in a month or so, although everything seems to be blooming a bit earlier than usual this season.

This adds some visual interest to the landscape, due to its color, but for some reason I don't particularly care for this plant. I guess it is good this is not in my yard, then.

nearbynature dogwood by Vicki Hertzberg from the GigaPan My front yard, Atlanta, 20120618 by Vicki Hertzberg
There is nothing more beautiful than springtime in the South, and dogwoods are so picturesque at that time of year. This is a pink blooming variety. I think this tree has a disease, and we may have to tear it out in the next year or so.

This is the wakaebisu variety. I has a salmon-shrimp colored flower, which is pretty enough in small doses. Some deadheading is probably overdue here. It should bloom again in the fall, as this is one of the forever cultivars.

nearbynature violets by Vicki Hertzberg from the GigaPan My front yard, Atlanta, 20120618 by Vicki Hertzberg
These grow freely, even in the lawn. A weed, but they are green from the street, so we let them be, except to mow them. Walter Reeves, the Atlanta gardening guru, gives that advice, and it is good.
