Potential bighorn sheep reintroduction site by Rurik List from the GigaPan From Sierra de en Medio by Rurik List
Bighorn sheep once inhabited in these mountains, but was extirpated from northern Mexico as a result of hunting and poaching. In the nearby Big Hatchet mountains of New Mexico, to the north, bighorn sheep has been reintroduced and there are some reports of sighting in the mountains of northern Janos, including this ranch. This is an area with potential for the reintroduction of the bighorn sheep, and because it is an isolated range, the surveillance against poaching would be easier.

Accross the valley by Rurik List from the GigaPan From Sierra de en Medio by Rurik List
The property from where the picture was taken is in an isolated range (Sierra de en Medio), therefore the long-term persistance of the population of large mammals such as black bears and pumas depend on the connectivity of Sierra de en Medio with the Sierra de San Luis range and adjacent mountains. Without paved roads or any major infrastructure, the valley still allows the movement of these animals

Ephemeral stream by Rurik List from the GigaPan From Sierra de en Medio by Rurik List
Cattle overgrazing over a century has taken its toll, former riparian corridors have lost the trees and without plantules to replace the old trees because of cattle browing, this important vegetation is dissapearing. These areas need to be protected from cattle, limiting the areas to which the cattle is allowed to go in.

Vegetation change by Rurik List from the GigaPan From Sierra de en Medio by Rurik List
As in most northern Mexico and southwestern United States, formerly open grasslands, such as the valley of Janos are turning into mesquite shrublands, as consequence of cattle, which eats the mesquite pods and spreads the seeds over the landscape, specially in intensively used aeras like near water and along roads. Ecologically keystone species such as kangaroo rats and prairie dogs control the expansion of mesquite and even eliminate it, turning it back into open grasslands.

Grasland recovery by Rurik List from the GigaPan Janos Biosphere Reserve viewed from La Cal by Rurik List
For many years, this land had more cattle than it should, leaving large portions of the ground denuded of any vegetation. Four years ago, cattle were removed and the vegetation is now more dense, but the recovery of perennial grasses will require ative restoration efforts.

Mesquite expansion by Rurik List from the GigaPan Janos Biosphere Reserve viewed from La Cal by Rurik List
This valle was an open grassland a century ago but it is turning into a mesquite shrubland. Cattle eat mesquite pods and disperse the seeds in their faeces through the landscape. In the vicinity of water and close to cattle trails this effect is more evident.
