Deformed Cross Bedding by Ronald Bruhn from the GigaPan Navajo Sandstone Outcrop by Ronald Bruhn
Crystal Hammers thesis project at the University of Utah is focusing on determining the origin of deformation within the Navajo Sandstone. This snapshot shows one example of deformed cross beds. Cross bedding is formed in sand dunes as sand grains migrate with the wind.

Faulted River Channel by Ronald Bruhn from the GigaPan Indian Canyon, Utah by Ronald Bruhn
This is one of two large river channel deposits in the image that are encased within the horizontally layered beds of an ancient lake that existed here around 50 million years ago. This river channel was faulted after the channel sandstone and lake beds were buried and turned into rock. The fault is a white diagonal band extending from lower left upwards through the river channel deposit. Did faulting occur when the rocks were being extended or when they were being shortened during mountain building?
