Neolithic Hunter with Bow and Bow Case by richardtbryant from the GigaPan Eagle's Nest, Jubbah, Saudi Arabia by richardtbryant
Petroglyphs like this one provide critical insight into ancient weaponry technology in northern Saudi Arabia. Notice his strange head, the ties at his waist for his loin cloth and his ankle bracelets.

Neolithic Sheep by richardtbryant from the GigaPan Eagle's Nest, Jubbah, Saudi Arabia by richardtbryant
This Neolithic ram is older than the lion petroglyph that is superimposed upon it. It's backward curving horns and short tail identify it as a sheep, rather than a bull. Petroglyphs are notoriously hard to date, but they can be placed in a relative chronology on the basis of superimposition, differential weathering, etc.

Ostriches by richardtbryant from the GigaPan Eagle's Nest, Jubbah, Saudi Arabia by richardtbryant
An ostrich family. Based on the relatively light patina, these petroglyphs are relatively recent compared to the deeply incised, Neolithic images on this panel. Compare these ostriches with similar images at Grafitti Rocks.

Neolithic human and sheep by richardtbryant from the GigaPan Eagle's Nest, Jubbah, Saudi Arabia by richardtbryant
These Neolithic petroglyphs show a human located near a domestic sheep. Note the much younger camel petroglyph, which partly overlies the Neolithic human figure.

Aurochs: detail of head and horns by richardtbryant from the GigaPan Eagle's Nest, Jubbah, Saudi Arabia by richardtbryant
The aurochs, Bos primigenius, is the ancestor of our modern cattle. The oldest petroglyphics, which are Neolithic in age (8,000-2500 BCE), often show examples of these wild cattle and their huge horns.

Neolithic man and domestic sheep by richardtbryant from the GigaPan Eagle's Nest, Jubbah, Saudi Arabia by richardtbryant
The distinctive form of this human, with a nearly linear head and rectangular torso, identifies the petroglyph as probably Neolithic. The man appears to be holding some type of tool or weapon, most likely a bow, but maybe a boomerang.
