Too far away to make out the species. There was another small diving duck quite close to where I was photographing from but looks like it was under water when the pic snapped.

I was on this same ridge the day before and got into a herd of sheep just about this same spot. This is too far away to be certain but I'm pretty sure this is some of the same herd.

Jasper Park Lodge Golf course by Peter Mills from the GigaPan Jasper - Old Fort Point by Peter Mills
Apparently a really nice course (I'm not a golfer). Might be most notable for having to allow the elk to play through - particularly during rutting season!

with winter approaching the inflow into the river is letting up (the river is glacially fed) so the water level is quite down by this time.

Trees on rock by Peter Mills from the GigaPan oimet canyon Thunder Bay Ontario - HDR by Peter Mills
Trees have seeded themselves in the vertical cracks where a bit of dirt has washed or blown in and I imagine a bit of water comes down from above. Other than that it's a pure rock face.

Sheer rock cliffs by Peter Mills from the GigaPan oimet canyon Thunder Bay Ontario - HDR by Peter Mills
When the bottom dropped out of the canyon due to the water erosion underground these sheer cliff faces were what was left. The canyon extends for several miles, greadually getting shallower as you move inland.

Several miles off in the distance you can see where the canyon empties down towards the lake. The hill you see is actually an island offshore.
