The Great Ancient Plotinoupoli by Nikolaos Oikonomou from the GigaPan Didymoteicho from the Castle by Nikolaos Oikonomou
Ancient Plotinoupoli
Plotinoupoli was created by the Roman emperor Traianus (98 – 117 A.D.) to honor his wife Plotini.
In 1965 after the construction of a trench of 1.60m depth by soldiers, the golden hammer-dressed bust of the Roman emperor Septimius Severus (193 – 211 A.D.) was discovered.
In the summer of 1977 and at the beginning of the 1880s a systematic excavation was carried out in Aghia Petra by the XVIIII (18th) Inspectorate of Prehistoric and Classic Antiquities. The excavations in Plotinoupoli began again in 1966. Nowadays, scientists excavate the North area (Section A),West (Section B) and South (Section C) of the building with the mosaics in order to find buildings and study the stratigraphy.
A wall with N-S direction was discovered in Section A. A floor of a building of Roman times (2nd century A.D.) was discovered in Section B and only two parts of walls dated back in the early Byzantine years were found in Section B.0 comments
