  12. naphthalene

naphthalene by NCSU Insect Museum ncsuinsectmuseum from the GigaPan Insect Drawer (scarabs) Take 2 by NCSU Insect Museum ncsuinsectmuseum

This is why many (most?) insect collections smell like mothballs! This fumigant helps protect our specimens from pests, such as dermestid beetles and book lice. It stinks, though, and is potentially unhealthy. It can also deposit on pins and specimens.

hard-bottomed unit tray by NCSU Insect Museum ncsuinsectmuseum from the GigaPan Insect Drawer (scarabs) Take 2 by NCSU Insect Museum ncsuinsectmuseum

We're slowly working through the collection to get rid of the few remaining hard-bottomed unit trays. They are not as...how do I write this politely...good as the foam-bottomed unit trays.

old dermestid damage by NCSU Insect Museum ncsuinsectmuseum from the GigaPan Insect Drawer (scarabs) Take 2 by NCSU Insect Museum ncsuinsectmuseum

That hole in the middle of the view was made by a carpet beetle (the family Dermestidae), which are notorious pests of insect collections. The damage happened BEFORE we received this donation of beetles!
