The Arch of Triumph and the Louvre Pyramid peak by karl kindt from the GigaPan paris from out of a window of the Louvre by karl kindt
The Arch is several miles away but the use of a zoom lens compresses the distance to give a sense of things being closer than they really are. In digital photography courses I teach about this phenomenon and why it occurs.

exit sign by karl kindt from the GigaPan Over head street view in St. Louis by karl kindt
what is interesting with these images is how a piece of text invisible when zoomed out of the image is so clear when zoomed in - this requires a bit of a wait but let the images all load and see how clear the word exit becomes

W89 T9A plate number by karl kindt from the GigaPan Over head street view in St. Louis by karl kindt
SO with this software and hardware one can get greater detail using cameras mounted around a city and one can see that this would provide security and government agencies with the kind of detail that is required in some terrorist situations.

Edward Jones Dome sign by karl kindt from the GigaPan St. louis from 24th floor by karl kindt
This zoomable image was completely hand held using steadshot rather than a tripod. The advantage is that I didn't need to wait for the robot to take each image and was able to take all the photos that comprise this image in about 3 minutes so that the exposure problems one can encounter when clouds keep changing the exposure situation come by.

joggers by arch by karl kindt from the GigaPan St. louis from 24th floor by karl kindt
The uniqueness of a gigapan like this is that it permits you to zoom in on specific details and in this case on joggers along a path by the arch. This gigapan was actually created NOT using a tripod but a hand held use of a Casio Exlim with a 20x optical zoom lens zoomed out about to a 10x length and stitched using Microsoft's ICE software

blue trash can by karl kindt from the GigaPan city st louis 360 by Jim Trotter
Notice the place where it had been has a light circle imprint on the pavement indicating it was not placed back where it was suppose to be and this could cause a problem with traffic or parking in that spot.
