Teewinot by Jason Campbell from the GigaPan Inspiration Point, above Jenny Lake, Grand Teton National Park, Wyoming (High Res) by Jason Campbell
meaning "maning peaks". At 12325 ft elevation Teewinot is lower than the 13770 Grand Teton behind it, but from the Jenny Lake area and Inspiration Point it dominates the skyline.

Lower Falls, Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone by Jason Campbell from the GigaPan Artists Point, Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone, Yellowstone National Park by Jason Campbell
Thousands of cubic feet per second crash over the brink and plummet 308 feet to the canyon below. This is believed to be the second most photographed spot in Yellowstone, behind Old Faithful.

Plywood shutters by Jason Campbell from the GigaPan White Grass Dude Ranch, Grand Teton National Park by Jason Campbell
The windows of the structures, in various stages of rehabilitation, are all covered in plywood. Some, like this big window on one of the larger buildings, are hinged to open, others just boarded over.

Everyone takes a picture by Jason Campbell from the GigaPan Old Faithful Geyser, Yellowstone National Park by Jason Campbell
Even if you haven't read the latest eruption prediction at the ranger hut or one of the hotels, you can estimate the time to the next eruption of Old Faithful indirectly by observing the number of people waiting with cameras out on the boardwalk. Once it's wall-to-wall people (even in the early season as here) it's ready to go.

Ferry by Jason Campbell from the GigaPan Inspiration Point, above Jenny Lake, Grand Teton National Park, Wyoming (High Res) by Jason Campbell
There is a beautiful trail all around Jenny Lake, as well as a ferry across it that runs every 15 minutes. This is one of two boats coming to take the last group of folks back at 4pm. Since we missed the last boat we walked the 2 miles back to the parking lot. The views were gorgeous, but the snow-covered trail was less fun than we would have liked.

oldest surviving by Jason Campbell from the GigaPan Only (Continuously) Surviving Herd of Bison in North America, near Old Faithful Geyer, Yellowstone National Park by Jason Campbell
Apparently the other buffalo herds were all hunted to near extinction, leaving this one as the last continuously intact herd.
I wondered, given the danger of humans plunging through crusts over the thermal areas into boiling waters how many buffalo a year die from scalding, but found no statistics on this. Perhaps the buffalo don't yearn to get as close to the geysers, thermal vents, hot springs, and fumaroles as humans do.

The Old Faithful Inn by Jason Campbell from the GigaPan Only (Continuously) Surviving Herd of Bison in North America, near Old Faithful Geyer, Yellowstone National Park by Jason Campbell
One of the world's largest log buildings. Designed by a 29 year old Ohio native. Not to be confused with the Old Faithful Lodge, a newer building across the way.
The ambience in the towering lobby and vaulted dining room are wonderful by day and by night. Plan to hang out in the hotel some one evening if you come. Some guest rooms are said to have poor sound-isolation but we (in one of the extension wings) didn't have a problem.

boardwalks by Jason Campbell from the GigaPan Only (Continuously) Surviving Herd of Bison in North America, near Old Faithful Geyer, Yellowstone National Park by Jason Campbell
In thermal areas, the ground can be a thin crust over scalding waters, and the extent of these subterranean dangers changes over time. To make it safe to get close enough to see the geysers well, the park service builds a variey of hard-surface trails, including raised boardwalks like these.

baby bison by Jason Campbell from the GigaPan Only (Continuously) Surviving Herd of Bison in North America, near Old Faithful Geyer, Yellowstone National Park by Jason Campbell
So cute, you just want to go pet them! But that would be a bad idea, since buffalo can weigh half a ton, run 30 mph, and will defend their offspring.
Plus it's against park rules. Apparently people do get hurt doing stupid things like trying to take pictures of themselves riding the buffalo.

Giant Geyser by Jason Campbell from the GigaPan Giant Geyser, Yellowstone National Park by Jason Campbell
The "rock" formation here is called a "sinter cone" and accumulates at a rate of a few inches a century.
Giant was formant until 1955 and is slowly becoming more active. Nonetheless, it is not predictable and I didn't wait around for the next eruption (of which there were 45 in 2006). The eruptions can reach 250 ft, though, so it would be spectacular.

The Firehole River flows through Yellowstone's Upper Geyser Basin, past Old Faithful. This area is home to the majority of the world's active geysers.
