I am pretty sure that this is part of the wall that surround the mausoleum. The building itself is just out of sight to the left.

Fueling the Basler by Ella Derbyshire from the GigaPan Seeking the Ultimate Northern Exposure by Ella Derbyshire
We are fueling this Basler before its flight back to McMurdo.
Next month the Herc will fly. Instead of refueling here, here LC-130's will drop off some of their fuel to us. We will use the fuel for the small planes, for our vehicles and to run the generators that provide our heat and electricity.

Science Happens Here! by Ella Derbyshire from the GigaPan Basler Fueling at South Pole October 16, 2010 by Ella Derbyshire
From left to right you see the South Pole 10 meter Telescope, MAPO and the BICEP telescope. The big dishes are looking through the sky for hints about the nature of the universe when it was very young.

Zodiac by Ella Derbyshire from the GigaPan Penguins and People Robert Point, Antarctica by Ella Derbyshire
These sturdy rubber boats had rigid bottoms and an outboard motor at the stern. The zodiacs took us cruising in shallow bays where the Professor Multinovskiy could not go, and they brought us ashore to wonderful places like this stony point.

Fuel Hose by Ella Derbyshire from the GigaPan Skier Landing by Ella Derbyshire
This is a fuel hose, but it is not out here to refuel the plane, which is arriving with plenty of fuel. The LC-130 will offload fuel to us, and we will use the fuel to heat and power the station through the winter.

Traverse Tracks... by Ella Derbyshire from the GigaPan Skier Landing by Ella Derbyshire
These vehicle tracks were left by this summer's overland traverse from McMurdo which is 850 miles north of here. They dropped off fuel and cargo and headed back toward grid south, in the general direction of New Zealand.

They have been plugged in outside the cargo buildng all summer. Soon they will come in from the cold and work outside only on the warmer days of winter. Warmer days are -70 and above.

Last Chance for Cargo by Ella Derbyshire from the GigaPan Skier Landing by Ella Derbyshire
Cargo only arrives here in summer, which is from late October until mid-February. If someone is waiting for a package, and it's not on this plane, they will have to go without it for the next 8 months.

South Pole Passenger Terminal by Ella Derbyshire from the GigaPan Skier Landing by Ella Derbyshire
This little building with solar panels is pleasantly warm as long as the sun is shining. With no more planes this season, and sunset just over a month away, we will tow our passenger terminal off to a line of other summer buildings where it will weather the cold darkness and drifting snow of a South Pole winter.
