  1. Escaping Ball

Escaping Ball by giga_olaf from the GigaPan Torus Shape With Escaping Balls by giga_olaf

Note the cylindrical cut-out of the wire cage.

  2. Piston, Pin and Snap Ring

Piston, Pin and Snap Ring by giga_olaf from the GigaPan HONDA CBX 1000 MOTORCYCLE ENGINE by giga_olaf

One of the six pistons with the pin and one of the 2 snap rings to secure the piston pin.
The pin connects the piston to the connecting rod. The 2 snap rings fit in a groove in the piston and keep the pin in place.

  3. Cross Section of Valve Tappet

Cross Section of Valve Tappet by giga_olaf from the GigaPan HONDA CBX 1000 MOTORCYCLE ENGINE by giga_olaf

The tappet is pushed down by the camshaft lobe to open the valve.
The free play is adjusted by replacing the yellow tappet shim with a shim with a different thickness.

Outside diameter: 27.972 mm ... 27.993 mm (who cares?)

  4. Exhaust Camshaft for Cylinders 4, 5 and 6

Exhaust Camshaft for Cylinders 4, 5 and 6 by giga_olaf from the GigaPan HONDA CBX 1000 MOTORCYCLE ENGINE by giga_olaf

Note the groove to couple the two piece camshaft with a Oldham coupler. Between the 2 lobes you see a ring. It's purpose is to support a tool to press down the tappet when replacing a valve shim.

  5. Oldham Coupler for Camshafts

Oldham Coupler for Camshafts by giga_olaf from the GigaPan HONDA CBX 1000 MOTORCYCLE ENGINE by giga_olaf

The Honda CBX-1000 6-Cylinder engine uses hollow double overhead camshafts that are composed of 2 halves, that each operate 6 valves.
The 2 halves of each camshaft are connected with this Oldham coupler.
The Oldham Coupler, invented by John Oldham in 1820, uses a groove and tongue to tranfer torque between 2 parallel but not collinear pieces of camshaft.

  6. Wheel on Exhaust Camshaft

Wheel on Exhaust Camshaft by giga_olaf from the GigaPan HONDA CBX 1000 MOTORCYCLE ENGINE by giga_olaf

The big left side of the wheel is connected to the smaller wheel on the crankshaft. The ratio is 1:2 so
the camshaft rotates at half the crankshaft speed.
The right wheel is used to drive the inlet camshaft from the outlet camshaft.

Valve Bottom. by giga_olaf from the GigaPan HONDA CBX 1000 MOTORCYCLE ENGINE by giga_olaf

    Inlet valve.

What a nice new valve. See the rest of the engine reflected in it.

    Exhaust frontpipe fixation ring.

    Note the nice cooling fins.

  9. Tappet Shims

Tappet Shims by giga_olaf from the GigaPan HONDA CBX 1000 MOTORCYCLE ENGINE by giga_olaf

Shims to adjust the valve clearance.
The shims can be lifted out easily and come in many different strengths (thickness).
25 different shims are available from 2.30 mm to 3.50 mm thickness.
Valve clearance is 0.06 mm ... 0.13 mm.

Cross Section of Piston by giga_olaf from the GigaPan HONDA CBX 1000 MOTORCYCLE ENGINE by giga_olaf

Cross Section of Piston and Conrod.

Piston: diameter: 64.5 mm, stroke: 53.4 mm.
The pin is locked between 2 snap-rings.
