Neogene Gravel Plateau by Joshua Feinberg from the GigaPan Frying Pan Gulch by Joshua Feinberg
One of the features that we try to get the students to map are isolated islands of Neogene gravel composed of Paleozoic Quartzite from Dutchman Mountain to the east. These gravel "islands" are found stranded on high, flat plateaus throughout the mapping area.

Junipers preferentially growing on the Kkl. by Joshua Feinberg from the GigaPan Frying Pan Gulch by Joshua Feinberg
Sometimes a particular rock layer will preferentially host a specific kind of vegetation. The Lower Member of the Cretaceous Kootenai Formation (Kkl) seems to frequently host small juniper trees as seen in this narrow strip. Juniper trees occasionally occur in other units as well, but they most frequently thrive in the Kkl.

Looking towards the nose of the plunging anticline. by Joshua Feinberg from the GigaPan Frying Pan Gulch by Joshua Feinberg
There is a beautiful sequence of ridge-forming rock layers (the Gastropod Member of the Cretaceous Kootenai, Kkg) that curl around the landscape in this area demostrating a kind of fold that geologists call an plunging anticline.

Salem State University Students by Joshua Feinberg from the GigaPan Frying Pan Gulch by Joshua Feinberg
There was another student group mapping the area on this day. The great thing about this was that one of their instructors was a recent UMN graduate student named Rory McFadden. The two students in this picture are leaving the Gastropod Unit of the Cretaceous Kootenai Formation (Kkg) and heading into the Upper Unit of the Cretaceous Kootenai Formation (Kku).
