Kyle House's Snapshots

Go to page:
  1. The 'middle' lava

The 'middle' lava by Kyle House from the GigaPan Intracanyon lava flows at Rinehart Cliffs, Owyhee River, OR by Kyle House

Could this possibly be the oldest of the three obvious lava units here? Note that it is clearly overlain by the upper lava, but the strat relation with the lower lava is not obvious. Possible that the lower unit is inset.

  4. baked sediments

baked sediments by Kyle House from the GigaPan Intracanyon lava flows at Rinehart Cliffs, Owyhee River, OR by Kyle House

Rounded gravel evident here. Colluvium dominates to left. Colluvium hosts cooked carbonate soil. Note contact and pinchout to right.

Three old intracanyon lavas here. by Kyle House from the GigaPan Jackson Hole and Intracanyon Lava, Owyhee River, OR by Kyle House

Upper lava: Bogus Rim (~1.9 Ma)

Lower Lava: Arock (?) 2-3 Ma?

  12. Clarks Butte Lava Remnant

Clarks Butte Lava Remnant by Kyle House from the GigaPan Jackson Hole and Intracanyon Lava, Owyhee River, OR by Kyle House

The remnant we missed on at least 5 river trips. Looks just like the Miocene basalt when viewed from upstream. Obviously a younger lava when viewed from downstream. Lesson: turn around every now and then and see where you've been.

Hanging Fan by Kyle House from the GigaPan Jackson Hole and Intracanyon Lava, Owyhee River, OR by Kyle House

The hanging fan at Jackson Hole is pinned to a ~240 ka paleochannel position formed on the Clarks Butte lava.

River gravel by Kyle House from the GigaPan Lower Reach of the Middle Owyhee River by Kyle House

This 2 Ma-ish lava flow provides a key datum for the profile of the early Pleistocene Owyhee River where it overlies river gravel.

  33. sediment package between rhyolite flows

sediment package between rhyolite flows by Kyle House from the GigaPan Iron Point, Owyhee River, Oregon by Kyle House

This sequence of volcaniclastic, fluviolacustrine sediments pinches out to the left (south) and thickens considerably to the right (north). It is sandwiched between massive and restistant blobs of rhyolite lava flows. Yes rhyolite lava flows.

faded petroglyphs by Kyle House from the GigaPan Petroglyph panel, Grapevine Canyon, Nevada by Kyle House

These glyphs were buried by alluvium about 1800 years ago. The associated terrace served as the scaffolding to reach the higher parts of the outcrop. Grapevine Wash is dynamic. Check it out in Google Earth.
