This is one of many rectangular holes in the side of the fortress. I am guessing that they were for wooden beams for some purpose.
This is one of the few places where the stones do not fit so close together that it is impossible to slide a dollar bill between them. I wonder why here.

This looks like it might be Indian Gardens, a beautiful resting place on the Bright Angel trail. When I was there, blackberries were hanging from the stream-side bushes, ripe and luscious.
