Sotto la spianata del capo di Bordighera c'è il "Marabutto" dove sono stati risistemati nel 1971, per il Cinquecentenario della fondazione di Città, tre vecchi cannoni dell'antica batteria costiera, puntati verso il mare. I cannoni si chiamano "Butafoegu, Tiralogni e Cacastrasse". Si racconta che il 14 luglio 1811 un incrociatore inglese, colto da bonaccia al largo di Bordighera, fosse stato trascinato dalla corrente verso la costa. La guarnigione del "Marabutto" puntò i cannoni verso l'imbarcazione e aprì il fuoco; il comandante calò una scialuppa e fece rimorchiare la nave al largo, senza rispondere al fuoco. Tuttavia, pochi giorni dopo tre vascelli inglesi comparvero all'orizzonte e bombardarono Bordighera, che dopo poco si arrese. Fu alzata la bandiera bianca; il comandante inglese invitò il sindaco a bordo e sancì la pace con un lauto banchetto.
