    A characteristic mineral of the Blue Ridge basement complex. Blue color comes from inclusions of titanium minerals.

    Dramatic fault breccia of quartzite fragments cemented by manganese oxides. Typical of the Blue Ridge thrust fault.

    Description:

    Paleo-karst! An ancient cave in gray limestone collapsed, and calcite (white) was precipitated in the spaces in between the fragments.

    Description:

    A vertical tube-shaped trace fossil that shows up in the Cambrian period of geologic time. Here, it is evident as a common primary structure in the Antietam Formation quartzite.

    Description:

    A "fanglomerate" deposited along the western edge of the normal-fault-bounded Culpeper Basin, a Triassic rift valley in north-central Virginia. Clasts are mainly limestone.

    A rare exposure of relatively clean Old Rag Granite (otherwise obscured by lichens growing on the surface of the rocks). Note the gray/blue quartz and the white/tan feldspar.

    The mountain is a classic place in Virginia to see spheroidal weathering -- both in the Old Rag Granite and in boulders of Catoctin Formation meta-basalt.

    A boulder derived from a feeder dike of the ~570 Ma Catoctin Formation flood basalts. Note how it is darker colored and more fine-grained than the Old Rag Granite (~1.0 Ga).
