Holly Forest by Brian Richards from the GigaPan Sandy Hook and New York City by Brian Richards
Sandy Hook's 64-acre "Holly Forest" is the largest maritime holly forest on the east coast of the United States. Rising tides and extreme weather events are gradually eroding the edge of this holly and pine forest on the bayside of Sandy Hook. How will coastal areas like Sandy Hook be affected as the sea level rises each year and extreme weather events increase?

Boardwalk - Spermatceti Cove by Brian Richards from the GigaPan Sandy Hook and New York City by Brian Richards
Boardwalk - Spermatceti Cove
Water takes the path of least resistance as the tides ebb and flow, and so water shapes the land. Here the tides have lifted the boardwalk out of the ground and left it lopsided. How will coastal areas around the world be affected as the sea level rises each year as a result of warming seas, glaciers receding and the ice shelves at the poles melting? Are we responsible or just the path of least resistance?

Nike Missile Radar by Brian Richards from the GigaPan Sandy Hook and New York City by Brian Richards
In 1954 Sandy Hook became home to Nike Site NY-56, one of a series of Nike missile sites that formed a circle around New York City. From 1954 until 1974, Nike Site NY-56 operated secretly as a last line of defense against a nuclear attack by Soviet Union bombers. Local residents were often aware that there were missiles behind the fences but very few knew that they were armed with nuclear warheads. Even today some residents find it "chilling" to learn that they lived so close. Here is a link to a multimedia virtual tour of the site studio360.pro/panos/nike/index.html
