Icarus by Anne Wright from the GigaPan XKCD #1110 by Phil Wherry
From www.explainxkcd.com/wiki/index.php?title=1110:_Click_and_Drag
:A reference to the Greek myth of Icarus and his father's escape from Crete by building wings of feathers and wax. The joke is that, the incredible part of the story, the fact that Icarus and his father actually flew with simple wax and feathers, is downplayed to try to give children an object lesson about humility and hubris.0 comments

Ethanol detoxification by Anne Wright from the GigaPan Metabolic Pathways by Anne Wright
The human body naturally produces the enzyme alcohol dehydrogenase which converts ethanol (aka grain alcohol) into acetaldehyde. It has been suggested that this pathway exists to cope with the fact that some gut flora naturally produce ethanol as a byproduct of their metabolism. See the book "Buzz: The Science and Lore of Alcohol and Caffeine" by Stephen R. Braun for more information.

Acyl-carnitine by Anne Wright from the GigaPan Metabolic Pathways by Anne Wright
Acyl-carnitine is involved in transferring fatty acids across the mitochondrial membrane. This seems related to the nutritional supplement Acetyl-L-Carnitine.

Glycolysis by Anne Wright from the GigaPan Metabolic Pathways by Anne Wright
Glycolysis is the first phase of cellular respiration. The main input is glucose. The main results are production of pyruvate (used by the next phase), reduction of NAD into NADH (used to power the Electron Transport Chain), and ATP (used to energize many cellular processes).

Pyruvate Processing by Anne Wright from the GigaPan Metabolic Pathways by Anne Wright
Pyruvate Processing is the second phase of cellular respiration. The main input is pyruvate, which was produced from glucose by the first phase. The main results are the production of CO2 and Acetyl CoA (used by the third phase), and the reduction of NAD into NADH (used to power the Electron Transport Chain).

The Krebs Cycle by Anne Wright from the GigaPan Metabolic Pathways by Anne Wright
The Krebs Cycle is the third phase of cellular respiration. It completes the oxidation of glucose. The main input is Acetyl CoA, which was produced from pyruvate in an earlier step. The main results are: production of CO2, reduction of NAD to NADH and FAD to FADH2 (both of which are used later to power the Electron Transport Chain), and ATP (which the cell uses to energize many cellular reactions).
