In 2003 the Robert Fire consumed these trees on Apgar Mountain. Along the bank of the creek fire was set purposefully to create a fire break, which helped to limit the fire's movement toward Glacier National Park's headquarters, park housing, and private homes.

Here you see the effect that the movement of the creek has on the state of the water. Where the current is minimal, the oxbow region, a layer of ice has formed with the sub-freezing air temperatures. The current maintains open water, at least when the air temperature is above zero F.
