  4. Bowline on a Bight

Bowline on a Bight by Thomas Hayden from the GigaPan Grand Canyon GigaView #13 Hance Rapid - On the Boats by Thomas Hayden

Bow Lines are tied as soon as a raft hits the beach to a solid tree, large clump of trees, or "sand stake". Because a boater needs to put hands into dense brush at the base of trees, snakebite exposure is high when tying boats off. At camp each night, the boats are also "backed up" with a line connecting them all together.

  5. Come Along Wench

Come Along Wench by Thomas Hayden from the GigaPan Grand Canyon GigaView #13 Hance Rapid - On the Boats by Thomas Hayden

You can clearly read, "4-Ton Cable Puller" on our primary piece of safety hardware. This leveraging device is to be used in extreme cases where a raft is pinned to an obstacle by the force of the water. Extreme forces exerted on equipment can often lead to catastrophic failure adding another layer of danger to an emergency, and should only be used as a last resort.

These two ammo cans are filled with Duracell AA batteries needed for Grand Canyon GigaView. NRS (Northwest River Supply) was a generous corp sponsor of the project. Smith Optics provided excellent protection & polarized visibility on the water.

BomberGear by Thomas Hayden from the GigaPan Grand Canyon GigaView #13 Hance Rapid - On the Boats by Thomas Hayden

a close up of the BomberGear logo on a spray skirt that kayakers wear to seal themselves into the boat and to keep water out. To exit a kayak when flipped over & underwater, one simply pulls on the spray skirt's loop handle to break the seal & swim free. Of course, kayakers prefer to simply perform an eskimo roll to right an overturned boat.

  8. Inflatable Kayak

Inflatable Kayak by Thomas Hayden from the GigaPan Grand Canyon GigaView #13 Hance Rapid - On the Boats by Thomas Hayden

A fun alternative to the big rafts for mild rapids. IK's can be impossible to paddle fast enough to keep up with the heavy rafts during upstream winds. They can be sturdy boats for big rapids, so long as they point directly into waves. They are very vulnerable to waves from the side.

Rocket Box by Thomas Hayden from the GigaPan Grand Canyon GigaView #13 Hance Rapid - On the Boats by Thomas Hayden

Military surplus ammunition boxes have been water proof standards for river runners for generations. Post-WWII, war surplus bridge-building rafts were among the first crafts to carry commercial rafting guests.

Good Current by Thomas Hayden from the GigaPan Grand Canyon GigaView #9 Nankoweap by Thomas Hayden

Unlike Marble Canyon upstream, this section of the Colorado River increases in speed with increased gradient. The riffles and eddy lines visible here indicated that water is continuously moving downstream. Smooth areas requiring more rowing to cross.

250 Million Years Uncovered by Thomas Hayden from the GigaPan Grand Canyon GigaView #9 Nankoweap by Thomas Hayden

This view of the Canyon wall profiles exposed rock layers representing a period from 500 to 250 million years ago. The talus slope at the river level is the Temple Butte Formation (500 myo). Above that is the cliff-forming Redwall Limestone (410 myo). Next, the dark red Supai Group & the Hermit Formation (300 myo). The light layers on top are the Coconino Sandstone - Moenkopi Formation (250 myo)

Exposure to surface conditions ages the outside of even the super hard Vishnu Schist. Here the dark purple sheen of patina is chipping away, exposing the true color of the rock layer.

Intrusions of quartz abound in the Vishnu Schist at the bottom of the Grand Canyon. This is the top of the Great Uncomformity, where 1.4 billion years of Earth's history has disappeared from the geologic record.
