    Description:

    This is a short term (2 hours) GPS base station set up on the glacier for a real-time kinematic survey of the surface elevation of the glacier in the near vicinity of the panorama.

    In this vicinity the debris cover of rocks is such a thickness (0.5 to 5 cm) that it enhances ice melt compared to the clean ice directly adjacent.

    Description:

    The series of linear features are moraines where the active glacier terminus paused for probably just a year (or less) during its retreat.

    Description:

    The creek cuts through an end moraine far downvalley from the active terminus.

    Description:

    What looks like a lateral moraine is actually leftover debris covered ice that is insulated by the sediment covering it. It will melt away slowly, and probably flows an insignificant amount.

    I built a small snow cairn at the Index site coordinates while I took GPS points surrounding it to come up with an average surface elevation of the glacier surface here.
