This steeple had particular significance during WW2 as it was the first real landmark that denoted that ships entering the Firth of Clyde had passed through the submarine boom and were therefore free of the dangers posed by U boats. The largest single movement of men in history ended here as the 16000 or so troops that had steamed at full speed in the Queen Mary from New York disembarked at Gourock pier. My grandfather drove some of the trains that moved them on to their camps.
