In pre-air conditioning days in Louisiana, many of the buildings have 14 ft. high ceilings, so that hottest air would rise to the top, leaving the lower level less hot. . . not cool or particularly comfortable, but bearable, at least! Notice the ornate vent grills above the windows, too, to increase ventilation.
