2008 Excavation Trench by Sarah Sharpe from the GigaPan Brown University Great Temple Excavation at Petra: View from the SE by Sarah Sharpe
This area of the site was the target of one of the excavation trenches for this particular season. It provided one of the most rich deposits of artifactual materials anywhere in the great temple complex. Along with a number of intact oil lamps and large amounts of pottery, one of the most intriguing set of finds were over 4000 sea urchin spines of varied sizes. In the previous 17 years of excavations at the temple less than 100 had been previously uncovered.
