Piazza del Anfiteatro. Lucca, Tuscany, Italy by T. E. Smith-Lamothe from the GigaPan Lucca, Tuscany, Italy by T. E. Smith-Lamothe
Notice that the buildings at centre form an ellipse. They were built on the remains of a Roman amphitheatre where gladiators and circuses once entertained the populace. At street level, one can still see stone arches of the portals to the arena embedded into the fabic of the buildings. How many of us can say the foundations to our apartment building or shop are 2,000 years old!
