Laser spotters are required by the FAA to watch for passing aircraft when the Laser Guide Star system is in use on the 3m telescope. The spotters can switch off the powerful sodium laser should an aircraft approach the beam. The artificial "star" created by the laser is used by the Adaptive Optics system on the 3m telescope to compensate for atmospheric turbulence.
