The stone reads: "Sacred to the memory of Christopher Cowan born in town of Shaloney County of Fermanach Ireland and died March XII MDCCXXXV aged LV years." According to the marker placed at the grave, "Born in Ireland, died on March 12, 1835. He may be considered the father of the steel industry in Western Pennsylvania having established the first rolling mill in this area in 1811. This stone is the only marker present burying ground using Roman numerals."
