These remarkably hearty little planes are frequently seen at the South Pole during the summer months of mid-November through mid-February. When it's winter here, you will find them in Greenland and in northern Canada.
These are the same planes used for the (very) rare
case of a mid-winter medical evacuation from the
South Pole, when it's too cold to use the
larger military aircraft. The first midwinter
medevac occurred on April 25, 2001, when the sky
was dark and the ambient temperature was
-91F/-68C.
