This is the 2008 version of the South Pole Marker. It was designed and created by members of the station's 2007 overwinter crew.
Ella, Thanks for the info... I was not aware that
the ice moved so fast. I presume that you are
referring to this GigaPan: www.gigapan.org/viewGigapan.php?id=
7626 as that of being the Geographic North
Pole. I know of no one else that have taken photos
of this magnitude. Thanks. Also, to me,
Kilgore661's snapshot: www.gigapan.org/viewGigapan.php?id=
14537&snapshot_id=40254 looks like a
frozen sea god ... Nautilus. Hope we see some more
GigaPans from you today before the sun sets :)
I hope to be remain here for 1 full day.
On August 2, 2007, Russia placed a titanium flag
on the sea floor at the geographic North Pole. Two
and a half miles above the flag the sea ice moves
so quickly that a marker would be off point before
you were done shooting your panorama. gigapan.org actually has a
panorama of the sea ice at Geographic North Pole
on July 25, 2008.
Ella, Is there a marker for the Geographic North
Pole? How much longer will you be stationed at
Amudsen? Where to next?
