When it has been raining, not only do you get waterfalls from the cave roof, but you get a stream / river down the middle of the cave - this area is the river pathway. Due to heavy rains outside (it IS the tropics) the river can go from dry to deep in a short time. I went in one day, it was dry, and within 30 minutes it had built up to 30cm deep over the trail on the way out. It could have gotton more difficult if we had stayed longer. In some Mulu caves, rain and flooding can be a serious problem. (another reason for the guide rule!)
