Hello Tom. This is the best answer I got: "In
English they are called 'Cairns' and are
placed in such locations to be visable against a
night sky. Used as a familiar reference point from
the bronze age up untill today for Bedouin
navigating at night. I think the pole hanging off
of the side would have been a more modern
addition."
