Mixed-grass prairies are not homogeneous across the landscape. The rolling prairies are broken up by hardwoods in the lowlands, crop fields on the flat productive soils, man-made water structures, such as the watershed dam in the photo, bare soil hills, and fences to keep livestock from running down mainstreet of the nearest town.
