Topic: Web Site and Forum / What happened to all the google earth data

For example:

Also, is there supposed to be a link somewhere to download the gigapan kmz file or view it in Google earth?

Topic: Web Site and Forum / What happened to all the google earth data

I just noticed that all my gigapans that had been placed in google earth are now placed somewhere along the equator near africa? I assume (hope) this is a bug and that the existing data hasn’t been deleted since it can take a long time to place each gigapan and I have hundreds of them, many of which were in use in projects using them in google earth. Any idea when this issue will be fixed?

Hi William

The secret URL is very long and not guessable, maybe you could put up a password protection system on your own site and display a link to the secret URL only upon succesfuly entering the password.

Just a thought anyway.

Jason

Topic: api.gigapan.org / is there no API anymore

JSONP calls to api.gigapan.org/beta/(.*).json?callback=foobar should now work as expected.

The thumbnailing API to api.gigapan.org/beta should also work again (e.g. http://api.gigapan.org/beta/gigapans/44337-596×...)

Topic: Gigapan Mechanism / Cable for Panasonic cameras

I’ve found posts online that show how to adapt Gigapan’s Canon cable to work with Panasonic cameras that have a micro jack remote port.

http://forum.getdpi.com/forum/showthread.php?t=…

I’d certainly look forward to a cable from Gigapan so others don’t have to do research to make their own cables or adapt cables can be appropriated from other products.

Topic: Gigapan Mechanism / Meaning of Epic 100 blinking battery icon

I’m not finding information in the manual on the meaning of a blinking battery icon while shooting a stitch series. I assumed it was to warn me of low batteries, but I installed a fresh set and got the blinking indicator. I find the Epic 100’s menu and display relatively intuitive aside from this (the other exception is that it’s hard to turn off the robot when it’s finished with a pano series).

Topic: Web Site and Forum / Can't access profile and other observations

Whenever I try to access my profile I get an error message page. At least today I was able to login successfully and upload a Gigapan to my account.

The new site puts up barriers to participation. I can see no link to the Upload software. I don’t think that Gigapan Stitcher should be the only way to upload to the site. Uploader still works but I already had it installed.

I recently bought an Epic 100 and will eventually install the Stitcher software if only to check it out, but given the application’s limitations I probably won’t use it much. I gather that the site’s new commercial focus is designed to drive users to Gigapan products, but it would be extremely shortsighted to put up hurdles to new users who don’t use Gigapan robots or software for whatever reason.

I’ll post a request elsewhere so it doesn’t get lost, but I’d use Gigapan much more if I could set up limited access to images via password protection. I’ve been taking images for scientists who would like to keep the images private until papers related to the images are published. Loading the images with the option to make them accessible only for someone who has the URL isn’t really sufficient protection.

Simon,
Sorry for the error, we’ve addressed it and you should not receive any more snapshot updates or comment update emails anymore unless you’ve selected this in your user profile.

Jason,
As previously stated we’re working on bringing a link to new new discussion board, it will provide open access to the prior content, but new postings will occur on this site. I agree that it has a lot of great information, sorry for the delay its taking us in getting it up on here.

These are great suggestions, and thank you. I’ll see what we can do to get these on the next schedule. If you would like to send us other suggestions please feel free to submit a General Inquiry under Contact Us at the bottom of the page.

I agree a ‘RANDOM’ GigaPan would be great. I also really miss the easy access to the ‘MOST RECENT’, I truly am interested in what other people are making and posting, I always thought it was the most egalitarian part of Gigapan – not everyone can have a ‘most popular’ Gigapan, but you can be right at the top for a short while with ‘MOST RECENT’, now no more.

661, I think your mashup pages are awesome! A great way to discovery new Gigapans and presented very nicely too. Browsing and meandering among GigaPans is what is needed. We need more tools to make this easier.

I would propose Gigapan.org make a ‘labs’ section where people like you and I can share our mashups with others in a manner under the gigapan.org domain so that there are not any license issues with the content creators. Kind of like the old Google labs, how about http://labs.gigapan.org ? Gigapan would get free labor and great code out of us and end users could try new things, and as it would be a ‘beta’ lab, it would not have the expectation of perfection.

Topic: Upload / File Corrupt or Timing Out

I’m still unable to upload tiff files that I previously exported from the gigapan stitcher software. I am using the latest version of the uploader (1.2.0087)and I get this message, “Upload aborted: Error opening image D: file location”. Do I need to have the image in a specific location?

Update: I found the link (hidden amongst the settings you can alter when you click on Edit).

I can also confirm this bug and have reported it to GS via the Support Link (although I notice they have no “Bug” category :-)

Sorry Rob I don’t know what you mean. I haven’t used groups or galleries and it is a long long time since I wrote that code. If you have the time to spell out what you are trying to do then I will look into the code for you.

I agree that the new home page does not make it easy to find new stuff. I’d go further and say that it doesn’t encourage browsing. I think there needs to be less space given to hype and more space given to thumbnails of gigapans so that newcomers can immediately get a flavour of what is on offer.

I don’t want to sing my own praises, but I use the tools I wrote and put up at http://www.kilgore.org.uk/cgi-bin/surfing/surfe… and every time I use the “Show random gigapans” I find something that amazes me.

I do exactly the same thing Jason and agree 100%. A quick fix is to not display the Reply button at all when editing a post.

I have enabled monitoring on a couple of threads. I expected to be emailed whenever there was a contribution to the thread but this does not seem to happen.

Is this a bug or does “Monitoring topic” mean something else?

Hi Chris and Jason,

Sorry for the problem. Jason, your analysis is correct — we appear to not be supporting JSONP correctly, even though we intend to. Hang tight while we work on a fix for this.

Topic: Web Site and Forum / 'Edit' post and 'Reply to Topic' button blues

When I edit a post I have made (which I usually wish to do, upon seeing the post and thinking what could be said better), I click the ‘Edit Post’ button, make the edits and improvements, and then click that big blue button underneath the text input area ‘Reply to topic’, only to have my edits disappear: its the wrong button, you have to use the ‘Save Edit’ button which is way over to the right and non-obvious colored. I know this, and yet, I keep pushing the wrong button. The blue button ‘Reply to Topic’ looks like what I should be pushing visually, its the brightly colored button, and its where I expect the action button to be placed. It really should not be shown in this context as we are already in the ‘Topic’. ‘Edit post’ should work like ‘Reply to topic’ currently works, with the ‘Save’ and ‘Cancel’ buttons directly underneath the text edit box, and the ‘Reply to topic’ button above the box, not below it. I don’t think the web designers of Gigapan.org have used their product layout- for instance, why is this text input box so narrow, its a fixed width page, and it only allows for maybe 20% of the fixed width, reserving 80% for grey box and thus not allowing the posts author to see much of their post without using the edit box’s scroll bar? Please, if you wish to make for a vibrant forum community, do some edits on the user interface;)

seriously I just edited this post and almost pushed the wrong button again!!!!, and its fresh in my head on the topic at hand, and I still can’t do it right!!!

Topic: Web Site and Forum / Forum

The old forum is still at http://forum.gigapan.org and does contain a wealth of ideas, methods, information, and knowledge starting from the first beta test post to the present and was never completely abandoned. I would love to see Gigapan.org bring the good contents over to the new forum. Many topics and questions that people may have- have already been thought about and answered (although some of the contents should be parsed;)
