Yes and no.
Yes, the 300 f/4 is OK for the EPIC Pro.
But with such a long lens, you wont be able to capture the azimuth with the EPIC Pro.
Also, a 360° spherical pano with a D800 and 300 f/4 requires several thousand photos. The pano will be a few tens of gigapixels, which cannot be handled by all softwares. Processing will take hours, if not days, with an ultrafast computer. Succeeding such a pano is a real challenge! So think twice if you are not a true pano expert!

I purchased an Epic Pro directly from gigapan.org, but I didn’t get an e-mail (and I searched for it). After investing so much in the equipment, I think it would be reasonable for current users to be offered an upgrade path.

Dear Gigapan Users:

I am stumped and looking for ideas. There is a ceremonial structure that I would like to shoot in Peru. The building is 30m per side (here is a picture of half the length of the front that I’ve taken already <http://gigapan.com/gigapans/108285>). In the front I have about 50m of space to step back. However, there are carvings around 3 sides of the building (the back is still covered and thus inaccessible). On the sides I can only stand back about 5m or less resulting in presumably a distorted and huge panorama. Is there a way to shoot all 3 sides and stitch them together in a uniform way to capture a single shot of all the iconography? Any ideas greatly appreciated.

Angelko: What’s funny is that about two days ago, the rest of my pictures were evaluated. Furthermore, my latest was scored a 138 almost immediately…so thanks. However, my first two photos had explore scores above 100 and now they’re closer to 50…why the change? I guess I don’t entirely understand how the explore score is evaluated (e.g. a algorithm? based on viewing traffic?).

Matthew, thanks for the reminder. Yes, the Epic Pro can shoot columns-right, columns-left, rows-down, rows-up. The Epic and Epic 100 can shoot columns right, rows-down, rows-up.

While my post does not add much to the thread, but what is the current status of the Explore Score issue. My first two GigaPans received Explore Scores the next day (or two after), but I have been posting since and haven’t received any.

That’s another good option. I’m currently in Peru doing my research now and also documenting archaeological sites that are slowly eroding. I am just gathering as much data as I can right now, but I’m trying to look forward to see how they can actually be used and these are all great solutions.

Glad to help. Personally, I expect conferences to have web access these days, and I generally bring my own (MiFi cellular Wifi access point) in case they don’t.

I should also point out that although it isn’t embeddable in Powerpoint, another option for showing a GigaPan without web access is to use the GigaPan Stitch software as a GigaPan viewer. You’ll need to have the image pyramids on the local computer (they are if you stitch them on it). Then just open the .gigapan file in Stitch and you should be able to use it as a GigaPan viewer.

Good advice, thanks Ron! While having separate web browsers open is likely the easiest solution, they sometimes distract from the flow of the presentation (especially using PowerPoint) and internet access is not always available at conference settings. Thanks for your help to allow me to integrate GigaPan into my research.

Evidently those Flash-based panorama viewers are not well supported in Powerpoint (I haven’t found a good account of how to embed them). However, QTVR panoramas are supported: http://wiki.panotools.org/Embed_QTVR_into_Power… That’s probably the only option you have for including an interactive panorama in a PowerPoint, presuming you don’t have web access. (If you did have web access, you’d just put in a link to the GigaPan website and this discussion would be moot, of course.)

If you know what you want to show ahead of time, my recommendation is to pre-render a movie (via screen capture or just filming your screen with a video camera) and follow Microsoft’s instructions for embedding movies in PowerPoint: http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/powerpoint-he…

2) Please cite an example by URL of “those sorts of Pano to Virtual Reality scenes that you see on hotel websites giving tours of rooms” to give us a better idea of exactly what you’re asking for. Until I see what you’re talking about I won’t know if it can be done.

It should be mentioned, however, that this is not possible on all machines. I don’t think that the simplest version of the Epic does not have that capability.

That’s a great idea Rob! I looked up Camtasia Studio and although it’s an expensive download, there is a 30 day free trial, plus as you say there is likely other screen capture software out there. What about creating those sorts of Pano to Virtual Reality scenes that you see on hotel websites giving tours of rooms? Can those be embedded in an easy/manageable way and if so, how?

I’ve been using the latest Duracell rechargable Ni-MH batteries and under most conditions can record more than 1200 shots per charge.

After trying to peer at the Gigapan bubble level underneath my camera, I realized that I had a more accurate leveling tool in my pocket: my phone!

My iphone and probably most smart phones have built-in multi-axis angle sensors. I have a free app called “Angle Meter,” and after testing it against some carpenter’s levels I determined that it’s really accurate! So if you struggle to read that tiny bubble level, try placing the flat edge of your telephone against your Gigapan surface and use any angle meter app.
