Topic: General Gigapanning / Best offline gigapan viewer?

Panotour Pro and KRpano are a couple of viewers that would allow you to do this. I have experience with Panotour Pro and it once you import the gigapan (in a TIFF or jpg file) you create a tour that opens up in a borwser or Adobe Flash

I think that feature you want is called Columns-Left in the options menu.

Topic: Indoor Gigapanning / Nodal Point - Need Help!!!

Alexander I did not use the Gigapan with the Samyang as it is not suited for this puros. I used the Samyang with a nodalpoint adaptor from Novoflex. However what you can do is mesure tne distance from from approx. 1,5 mm behind the golden ring to the point at the bottom of the camere right where you attach your tripod. Mark the distance measured on the Gigapan-rail. Try to get this point aligned with the center of your Gigapan. This is the axis the Gigapan rotates around.

Next try if you still notice a parallax. You can then finetune your system by moving the camera back and forth.

Topic: Embedding / Snapshots not working in IE

Hi Phil,

Is it the embed that’s causing the javascript error or the embed wizard page?

Thanks,
Gabriel

Thanks for a great response, Spherorama!

The Gigapan rail, on which the camera sits, actually has a scale. Did you have a chance to see what exact measurement the golden ring would be?

Thanks,

Alexander

Hi,

Am having problems getting snapshots to work in IE when embedding a Gigapan using the wizard. Additionally, it creates a javascript error. It does however work in firefox. Any solutions to this?

Thanks
Phil

Alexander,

on a cropsensor like the D5100 the Samyang lens covers 180 degrees over the diagonal of your format. So for a 360 deg. full sphere you’ ll need only 5 shots iaround if you mount your camera in portrait mode. To be on the save side you take also one nadir- and one zenitshot.

The Gigapan is not made for this kind of Panoramas. I use the Samyang 8 mm lens on a full frame Nikon D700 and D800. I cut off the lens hood in order to cover fullframe. I determined the nodal point of this lens about 1.5 mm behind the golden ring at the lenses front.

On a fullframe camera I need only 4 shots hrizontally to cover a full sphere. Here is a sample of an interor shot with the Samyang on a D700.

They have a special importfilter which allows to select the GigaPan devices. Their Raw-Format KRO works just nicely together with the GigaPan uploader.

David,

Thanks for the reply!

If I get a 10.5mm lens, would that help?

Can you tell me if there is a Fisheye lens that works OK with Gigapan? Maybe my camera model or lens are not compatible?

Thanks,

Alex

After looking through all the options in the gigapan epic pro menu I have discovered that this is actually possible! Oops!

Topic: General Gigapanning / Auto focus not working with Gigapan pro auto trigger

Another tip for shooting with auto-focus…
If you are shooting a scene that has a lot of depth variation (like this: http://www.gigapan.com/gigapans/101140), set the shot order to be ROWS rather then the default COLUMNS. Then you can shoot the top rows that are all sky on manual focus but when you get to the parts of the scene that are close, you can switch to Auto-focus and pay closer attention to making sure that you don’t drop any images due to focus issues. Also note that sometime changing the focal point setting on the camera to either Centered or Average may help depending on the scene. Keep in mind though that finding missing images in a large pano shot using ROWS can be a lot harder and very time consuming so it is worth the effort to listen closely and make sure the camera doesn’t miss any shots.

Topic: General Gigapanning / Best offline gigapan viewer?

What is the best software for viewing a gigapan offline? Hoping to find something that lets me view a gigapan in fullscreen.

I know the stitcher says fullscreen but its not quite a true fullscreen!

Alex,

For your Samyang lens, there is a good article about locating it.

“NodalPoint”:http://www.hugha.co.uk/NodalPoint/Index.htm

Your lens is listed in the article. However, the GigaPan system was designed for use with much longer focal lengths. Three is little or no advantage of using it with an 8mm lens. However, there are stitching programs and indexing pano heads that are tuned specifically to work with wide-angle and fisheye lenses.

Its a little manual, but you can do this by changing the per_page value in the search results URL query string.

E.g.

Topic: General Gigapanning / controlling zoom speed for video capture?

The mouse wheel zooms in or out in pretty small increments, so you could capture about 50 still screen shots and use them as individual frames. Repeat each frame two or three times in a video for a slower zoom. You might need two monitors to do this.

Could we have the option to display 10, 20, 50 gigapans on a search result page? I find it much easier/faster to browse while scrolling then wonder what is on the next 55 pages.

Also, Kilgore661 mentioned an idea about random results. Maybe we could have an “I’m Feeling Lucky” button like Google (I’m Feeling Gigapixels?) That would be a fun way to browse with or without a search term to filter the “Lucky” result.

I second Terry’s diagnosis. You don’t have nearly enough overlap. You should aim for 30-50% overlap of adjacent images. I usually check this visually each time during the early stages of the shot.

It looks to me like you don’t have enough vertical overlap. Th stitcher is also having a problem with the repeating similar shapes in the building on the right and the trees in the middle. Not much you can do about that, but more overlap should help.

Dear Gigapan,

Maybe this is possible already, if so, how do I go about setting this before taking a panoramic?

There are certain circumstances where I would prefer for the gigapan to take the photos in an anticlockwise order. So far I cannot work out how to do this, if this is not possible with the current system, some kind of firmware update or something would be greatly appreciatted!

Thanks!
