Devil's Racecourse in Ft. Ritchie, MD is a 700-meter-long blockfield created when the area experienced a periglacial climate during the Pleistocene. It is thought that boulders of Weverton quartzite from South Mountain on the west and Catoctin metabasalt from the east weathered out of their respective mountains an...

Weathering pits called opferkessel form atop rock exposures due to chemical and physical weathering. They may superficially resemble potholes, but are not caused by vortices of swirling water "drilling" into the rock. The water trapped in the opferkessel may host small ecosystems with surprising organisms.

I did this with my 90mm Tamron macro. Only 16 pictures and it was only two feet away. I think the resolution is better. But because I am close, I am getting a curve in the gigapan. I think to do these you need a rail that provides a third motion to slide the camera along the plane of the subject.

Another attempt at lichens on bark. I was using my T2i with 70-300mm at 300mm, f16, auto focus, no IS. 45 jpg pictures on Standard scene. Early morning in direct sun. I am still not satisfied with the extreme detail. Might be at the camera/lens resolution. Will try again with my macro.

This is a small gigapan (48 pictures) of a piece of lichen. This lichen is magnified 300x using a scanning electron microscope. Lichen is an interesting organism, it is a mixture between a fungus and an algae which can withstand extreme environments. The Spanish have exposed lichen to the vacuum of space and shown t...
