This is one of a number of spectacular fresh roadcuts along the Trans-Canada Highway near Parry Sound, Ontario. I couldn't shoot it from the side of the highway, but I found this vantage point and extended my GigaPan unit and tripod to shoot over a fence to capture this scene.

This is a north facing roadcut in marble. Rather than shoot it in shadow I revisited it again and again during the day hoping the afternoon/evening light would eventually come around and illuminate it. My wait was more or less in vain. This is the last light of day and despite partial illumination I suspect I'd have...

This is a roadcut in marble opposite another I'm uploading. The more geologically interesting features are in the other roadcut, but because of the poor lighting on it you probably won't be able to make them out. I shot this small GigaPan just to remind myself that shooting a roadcut in uniform shadow yields more det...

This is the wide view of a roadcut in diopside-rich metasedimentary rocks south of Tupper Lake in the Adirondacks. A second macroGigaPan of a portion near the south end of this outcrop is also uploading.

State Route 3 through the northern Adirondacks is know to geologists as "The Anorthosite Highway" because of its spectacular cuts throught the Marcy Massif anorthosite unit. This is the third of a series of three GigaPans I shot at this roadcut to illustate the anorthosite at a range of scales.

This cloudy morning it was at least as inspiring as the view in the opposite direction.

A closeup of the roadcut opposite the Canada Lake Store. Carrnockite is a type of orthopyroxene-bearing granite, which gives this rock its green hue. Orthopyroxene (rather than biotite or hornblende) reflects the granulite facies conditions under which this rock was metamorphosed. Midway through this one the partl...
