Lava Lake is a moraine-dammed lake (filling a glacial trough) in the Madison Range of southern Montana. It is accessed via a 6-mile hike from the canyon of the Gallatin River.
Absaroka Volcanics (Eocene) dominate the cliffs on the other side of this glacial trough, as well as the talus slope in the foreground.
