This Manitoba maple has been growing on the banks of the Peace River for centuries. It was a mature tree more than 200 years ago when the fort was built by the early explorers and fur traders. Although some of the limbs have died and others are supported by metal poles, the main tree still thrives.

The bridge crosses the Peace River at Fort Dunvegan a former Northwest Company trading post. Prior to the construction of this suspension bridge there was a ferry here. The highway carries traffic between Grande Prairie, Grimshaw and Peace River, Alberta.
