This is the view from the Getty Museum in the Santa Monica Mountains, overlooking the west side of Los Angeles. It was a mostly clear, windy day, but the clouds to the east (rain?) limited visibility a bit. The furthest point along the coastline is Redondo Beach, Rancho Palos Verdes -- almost to Long Beach.

This amazing tree is located in Santa Monica, on a property overlooking Pacific Palisades and the ocean. To get an idea of the size, compare it to the ful size RV in the lower right of the panorama. It is on private property, so if you go looking for it, please be respectful.

This is a "time lapse snapshot" of a disc golf tournament in Huntington Beach, California. Disc golf is like regular golf, but uses frisbees instead of balls and clubs. The holes are metal baskets with chains designed to catch the discs. For more info, check out www.pdga.com

There are paths all throughout Griffith Park, where the observatory is perched. I walked down the hill a couple hundred yards to get this profile of the building against the dusk sky.

Shot at sunset from the roof of Griffith Observatory, overlooking Los Angeles. It was a clear day, but as soon as the sun went down, the marine layer rushed in, ruining the shot I had imagined. We'll try this one again when it warms up a bit and the sunset can really light up the LA basin.

This is part of the gardens at the J Paul Getty Museum in Los Angeles. It was a beautiful windy day, although on the chilly side for LA.

Labor Day weekend on Lake Shasta... the water level is much lower than normal this year. (Shasta is a major water source for Northern CA, and the water level is dropping about 5" per day! Each of the lines on the bank is one day's worth of erosion from the level dropping. Anyone who does not believe that California...

The Griffith Observatory is beautiful, but it is particularly striking at night. Recently renovated and expanded, it is a great place for visitors of all ages, and it has amazing views of downtown and the LA basin from its roof and terraces. Read all about it: www.griffithobservatory.org/obshist.html
