Chicago's Navy Pier. It used to be part of the U.S. Navy facility in WW2, then for a while the University of Illinois (of which I'm affiliated) was located here. Now it's one of the big tourist attractions along the lake, with the Ferris Wheel, an IMAX theater, The Children's Museum, and a number of shops and events.
