Machu Picchu is an Inca site in the Andes Mountains of Peru. It is a UNESCO World Heritage site and has been called one of the new Seven Wonders of the World. Hiram Bingham is credited with discovering Machu Picchu, but there were people living there at the time of his "discovery". The better-known pho...

This is the Inca fortress Sacsayhuaman (elevation approx. 3555 meters). There were originally three towers on top of this site, but these were destroyed by the Spanish. It was a very bright day. Some parts of the photo are overexposed. I wanted to be sure of getting the details of the stonework, so I set the expo...

Tagus Cove and Darwin Lake from a point above the lake. The Beagle anchored in the cove for a day while looking for water. Despite the name, this is not the hypersaline lake Darwin described. That lake is somewhere south of this location. Fernandina is visible in the far distance.

This is the gun deck of the USS Constitution. This is my first try at a Gigapan with very low light levels. I had to restart this one because 1.2 seconds per image is not compatible with a half second exposure. 2.2 seconds per image worked well. A cold winter day turns out to be a good time to do this. There a...

In 1831, Wulaia bay was the site of a very short-lived missionary settlement established by Richard Matthews. He was brought there by the Beagle which was captained by Robert Fitzroy. It was this voyage of the Beagle that Charles Darwin was part of. This bay may also have been the site of the boat theft on an earl...

This was taken from the first terrace on Wayna Picchu. In addition to Machu Picchu, the hairpin turns of the access road that lead to the site can be seen to the left. To the right, one can see the Urubamba river. There are llamas visible in several places in the Machu Picchu site. How many can you find?

South Plaza island looking west toward Santa Cruz. There might be land iguanas hidden somewhere in this landscape.

We're looking toward North Plaza and the Gordon rocks. Note: there was some salt spray on the lens after this shot. It might have interfered with the clarity of some images.
