23 bison from Wind Cave National Park were taken to Janos to start a breeding group for restoration in other parts of northern Mexico. Thes bison are genetically pure, that is, they have no cattle genes, unlike most (95%) of the bison in North America.

Probably the largest single herd of bison I saw in the park, this herd was the focus of conservation efforts at the beginning of the twentieth century that ultimately saved the North American bison from extinction.
