The Silver Cliff highway tunnel on the North Shore of Lake Superior, was opened for traffic in the summer of 1994. Highway 61 had steep, unstable cliffs and contained tight curves requiring this tunnel to be built. Further North a couple of miles is the Lafayette Bluff Tunnel similar to this one.

The Colorado River runs alongside the trail at this I-70 rest stop. A tunnel was put through the mountain on the other side of the river so that the highway would not be seen from this location.
