I did this with my 90mm Tamron macro. Only 16 pictures and it was only two feet away. I think the resolution is better. But because I am close, I am getting a curve in the gigapan. I think to do these you need a rail that provides a third motion to slide the camera along the plane of the subject.

Another attempt at lichens on bark. I was using my T2i with 70-300mm at 300mm, f16, auto focus, no IS. 45 jpg pictures on Standard scene. Early morning in direct sun. I am still not satisfied with the extreme detail. Might be at the camera/lens resolution. Will try again with my macro.

One of the last scenes I shot before my GigaPan Epic broke down. Something happened with the GigaPan software or circuit board inside the unit and it just stopped working, when turned on it says 'please replace battery' even though batteries are fully charged.
