Anza Borrega is a California State Park on the East side of San Diego County. This dry habitat is alive at night with the howl of coyotes and the call of owls. Large moths come out at night to pollenate the cactus and trees. Sunset causes an immediate drop in temperature that changes as fast as the light disappears.

We had rain and accumulated hail that looked like snow. Dramatic weather often produces vivid colour play that draws me out into the light.

Chasing transient light, seeking golden rays passing in front of shadows.... and the layers of golden hills, with glowing air between here and there.

These rocks were one piece before they cracked into pieces. Then the rest of it weathered away, eroded the rocks, and left these maze like piles. I was going to get out of the way for this one, but was comfortable and slow to realize that I was soon to be captured.

Glaciers moved in different directiions across this place and the scratch and shine are evident here. This granite has incorporated gravel into the matrix and it only partially melted and was apparently extruded and flowed before it froze in place before the Sierra was fully formed.

California Black Oak grows in Southern and Coastal California. This one is probably 300 to 500 years old and stands in the campground at Pinnacles National Monument, where Condors still soar; www.nps.gov/pinn/index.htm
