Along Highway 12 - it was hard not to stop here with the sun hitting the outcrop at a nice angle. I may be wrong about this, but I think these outcrops are part of the Cretaceous Straight Cliffs formation (sandstones and shales), which has occasional organic rich layers - including coal.

At this point, the Navajo Loop trail diverges slightly - the right trail leads a short distance up to a small canyon with two natural bridges (look behind the tree in the canyon - they are both visible there). The trail itself, which goes through the area called "Wall Street", heads up the left fork back to ...

I highly recommend a hike on the Boynton Canyon trail in Sedona, AZ at night under the stars and moon. It is absolutely magical and soothes the soul.

Side trip along a dirt road to the trailhead for the Stump Spring Trail gives us a nice view of the orange rocks of the Claron formation, which are also responsible for the colorful scenery at Bryce Canyon.

The Romans built a camp (200 m2 (2,200 sq ft)) in the north-west corner of the original fort, occupied by a mixed force of 720 legionaries and auxiliaries. The fort was used as a base for about 5 or 6 years, but passed out of use by about AD 50, when troops were withdrawn for the campaigns against Caractacus in Wales, ...

Outside the entrance to Capitol Reef National Park is this particular outcrop - the red layers are offset just to the left of the mesa at the right side of the pan (I'll snapshot it...). There's a nice description of the geology on a nearby plaque (not visible here....)

At this point (between Escalante and Boulder), Rte. 12 in southern Utah crosses along the top of a ridge with drop-offs to both side, exposing expanses of Navajo sandstone occasionally cut by canyons.

The Queens Garden trail connects to another short trail (Navajo Loop), which provides a nice hike and great views of the canyon from a somewhat... lower viewpoint. These hoodoos are part of the area called "Wall Street".
