  1. Near the western margin of the Port Coldwell Alkali Complex, this roadcut exposes a beautiful example of an igneous intrusion breccia where blocks of early formed gabbro were frozen in the act of being engulfed by later, more felsic magmas of the complex.

  2. The Bixby Creek Bridge is one of a number along the Pacific Coast Highway in the Big Sur region that were completed in 1932. The drive is a spectacular one, if you ever have the opportunity to take it.

  3. The east side of this roadcut through marble in the Adirondack Lowlands exposes beautiful examples of ductile deformation.

  5. Interstate 68 passed through Sideling Hill in a way that makes geologists and civil engineers salivate. You can see the benched, blasted roadcuts well in this GigaPan. The geology, though visible here, will be seen more clearly in the GigaPan that I shot from the opposite side of the highway.

  6. When I first saw this sort of feature outcropping in a roadcut in Big Thompson Canyon, Colorado I thought they resesmbled dinosaur footprints. However, since these are found in Precambrian metamorphic rocks that is clearly not the case. In fact, this is probably some sort of metamorphosed concretion(?). This GigaPan...

  8. A roadcut through Columbia River Flood Basalts that were erupted into a shallow body of water. The basaltic lava interacted with the water to form both pillows and palagonite. Edi and Berti did a little rockclimbing here, too.
