I had originally hoped to get into the Barton Garnet Mine to shoot a macroGigaPan of the famous Gore Mountain garnets, but unfortunately I was a little too early in the season. The garnets at the locality featured here are from a now-abandoned garnet mine in the area that is currently located on state lands. The garn...

The panoramic camera aboard NASA's Mars Exploration Rover Opportunity acquired this panorama of the "Payson" outcrop on the western edge of "Erebus" Crater during Opportunity's sol 744 (Feb. 26, 2006). From this vicinity at the northern end of the outcrop, layered rocks are observed in the crater wall, which is about 1...

That's the name given to this particular overlook along Rte. 12 in southern Utah. Large expanses of Navajo Sandstone make up the majority of the foreground rocks - these were once (millions of years ago) a vast expanse of sand dunes. The remnants of the dunes are found in structures called cross beds, where layers of...

Across the street from the scenic overlook "On a Clear Day You Can See Forever" (www.gigapan.org/gigapans/32030/) is this particular outcrop, which is a really nice view of cross beds. These structures are remnants of sand dunes (millions of years old, now preserved in the sandstone rock).

A wide view of the West Castleton Fold. The West Castleton Fold was also the subject of my second ever (non-robotic) GigaPan (share.gigapan.org/viewGigapan.php?id=1204). Lighting was not optimal this time, but I did the best with what I had. Unfortunately, there would not have been time to shoot bracketed HDR...

Colloquially called 'the blues' because of the blue-grey color, these sedimentary rocks outcrop in a canyon along Rte 12 in southern Utah. The blue-grey rocks are part of the Cretaceous Kaiparowits formation, which formed when large rivers deposited their sediment. The orange layers in the distance are made up of...
