That's right, you heard me: cliffs of shale. Alright, I'll admit that there are sandstone caprocks, but still, CLIFFS OF SHALE! I can't imagine anyone has tried free climbing this cliff. They don't call it Luna Mesa for nothing.

I originally set up for a 750 image GigaPan, but about 200 images into it a cloud rolled in from the west and it was clear that if I continued I'd end up with a lot of frustration and no other GigaPans for the day. Consequently, I dialed back the zoom and shot a much smaller GigaPan when a gap in the clouds allowed it...

The rainbow in the sprinkler caught my eye as I was driving by and I couldn't resist stopping for an early morning GigaPan.

Outside the entrance to Capitol Reef National Park is this particular outcrop - the red layers are offset just to the left of the mesa at the right side of the pan (I'll snapshot it...). There's a nice description of the geology on a nearby plaque (not visible here....)

Partly cloudy skies meant shooting a bunch of smaller GigaPans than I normally would this day, some of them simply to document the landscape along my journey. This one was shot just north of Torrey, Utah.

The Mancos Shale is often a fairly barren landscape, but these hearty yellow flowers have found a way to add a carpet of color to an otherwise bleak landscape.

Just a little 360 panorama of the Factory Butte area. It's undoubtedly out of view, but Disney was just setting up down the road to shoot scenes from next summer's film "John Carter of Mars". I have a new appreciation of what the phrase "spared no expense" really means in the movie making business.
